KIEV, Ukraine -- Ukraine's Supreme Court convened in Kiev Monday to review allegations of vote-rigging in last week's presidential election.
"Examining the case could take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on how many representatives each side puts forward and the nature of their statements," spokesman Liana Shlyaposhnikova told reporters.
Liberal opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko wants the Nov. 21 victory of rival Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych nullified due to the fraud claims and a new vote held Dec. 12.
According to the official results released by Ukraine's Central Election Commission, 96.65 percent of registered voters turned out for the vote, which many independent and western observers said was flawed.
In the heavily industrialized eastern part of the country, calls for independence if the vote was overturned began circulating during the weekend, CNN reported. That region has closer ties to Russia, whose leader Vladimir Putin endorses Yanukovych.
