FALLUJAH, Iraq -- U.S. commanders leading the attack on the Iraqi city of Fallujah said Wednesday they are ahead of schedule, but far from finished, CNN reports.
Late Tuesday, Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz said the force of 10,000 U.S. and 2,000 Iraqi soldiers had reached the city center, only meeting small pockets of resistance on the third day of the offensive.
The Pentagon reported 10 U.S. troops and two Iraqi soldiers have been killed in the operation, called New Dawn.
"So far, we have achieved our objectives on or ahead of schedule," Metz said, adding "I think we're looking at several more days of tough urban fighting."
Fallujah is the base for Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terror network, and military officials said as many as 5,000 insurgents may have been inside the city, but slipped away.
The army uncovered various caches of two rocket-propelled grenades and 100 pounds of TNT explosives, mortar systems, ammunition rounds and a flak jacket.
