WASHINGTON -- The United States and European Union reached agreement Tuesday on new security measures and standards for maritime shipping containers.
The measures adopted in the EU-U.S. Joint Customs Co-operation Committee include the creation of an information exchange network, the agreement on minimum requirements applicable for European ports that wish to participate in the U.S. Container Security Initiative, or CSI, and identification of best practices concerning security controls of international trade. The reciprocal initiative has already been implemented at 20 European seaports, covering 86 percent of the outbound cargo containers that move through Europe to U.S. seaports. The expansion of the project was announced in Washington by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Robert Bonner, who said the new measures also include a pilot project that focuses on shipments moving through both the U.S. and the EU to other destinations.
