LONDON -- Britain will go to the polls to elect a new government on May 5, the Sun reports. Trevor Kavanagh, the tabloid's political editor, says he "can reveal" Blair selected May 5 because it offers his best chance of winning a third term.
The Sun reminded readers that it correctly predicted the date of 2001 election.
Political pundits had previously tipped May 3 as the likely date, or possibly a late election in the autumn.
Under British law there are no fixed term lengths. A general election has to be called by the government at least every five years, but traditionally one is held every four.
Other news outlets have reported the story but it has yet to be verified by the government.
