Two London suicide air attacks thwarted
Tue, Nov 23, 2004
Source UPI

LONDON -- Britain's ITV News said Tuesday it had learned of al-Qaida plans to crash planes into London's Heathrow Airport and Canary Wharf.

ITV News attributed its claim to a "senior authoritative source," saying crashing aircraft into the sites were among four or five al-Qaida plans that have been prevented by British security services.

The network said the attacks were modeled after the terror attacks on the United States Sept. 11, 2001, and security foiled the plan by ending the suspects' flight training.

However, the claims were greeted by some with skepticism given their timing on the eve of the queen's speech in Parliament, which outlined a legislative program dominated by bills to tackle terrorism and organized crime.

An unidentified senior security source told The Times of London he was unaware of such a plot, and pointed out al-Qaida rarely repeated major terrorist outrages.
