Syrian envoy slams Israel over peace talks
Tue, Nov 30, 2004

TUNIS, Tunisia -- Syria's ambassador to Tunisia said Tuesday that his country has no preconditions for resuming peace talks with Israel, and he accused Israel of evading peace. Faycal Alloni said the Syrian government acknowledges peace principles approved by the international community, including trading land for peace and U.N. Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338.

He charged that Israel was insisting on preconditions to restart the stalled peace negotiations.

"If Syria wanted to place preconditions, it would have asked for dismantling Israel's nuclear arsenal and placing it under international monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency," Alloni said.

"Syria is very well aware that the choice of just and comprehensive peace is the correct and right choice for achieving peace and stability in the region," he added.

Alloni's comments come at a time when Egypt has offered to mediate between Israel and Syria to help resume peace talks deadlocked since 2000.
