GAZA -- A 750-member special security unit will be formed to help establish order and the rule of law in the Palestinian territories, a PA official says.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath Wednesday revealed the decision to form the central Palestinian unit was taken last week by the national Security Council, headed by Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia.

"Criminals and illegal weapons can be only controlled by strengthening the security apparatuses," Shaath said.

Shaath said the council is working to finalize a complete plan to guarantees all security needs.

The Palestinian Authority has intensified efforts to strengthen security to ensure smooth preparations for the Jan. 9 presidential elections.
