Sen. Specter fights for top Judiciary post

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Arlen Specter hoped to wrap up his bid for the chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, despite protests from social conservatives.
The moderate Pennsylvania Republican made his appeal to the Senate Republican leadership and members of the panel in closed-door meetings Tuesday, following an uproar from conservative Republicans who say pro-abortion rights Specter is not conservative enough to shepherd President Bush's conservative nominees for the federal bench through Senate confirmation. So far, Specter -- who is in line for the post -- appears to have weathered the campaign against him, with a growing list of GOP lawmakers offering their public support, including Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Robert Bennett of Utah, Trent Lott of Mississippi, and Gordon Smith of Oregon. Although Senate GOP leaders have remains mum about whether they will support Specter, he is expected to retain the post. Copyright 2004 by United Press International
