MOSCOW -- Russia has set up a new task force to improve security in the protection and movement of nuclear weapons, Interfax news agency said Friday.
A coordinating group has been set up at Russia's Defense Ministry to harmonize Russian principles for the safe storage and transportation of nuclear weapons with those of the United States and map out military cooperation guidelines, ministry sources told Interfax.
The new initiative comes after a series of Chechen terrorist attacks in Moscow and North Ossetia killed almost 450 people in a single week in September. President Vladimir Putin has ordered a drastic overhaul and upgrading of security precautions, especially around nuclear weapons and other dangerous materials.
