MOSCOW -- Russia's test-firing of an anti-missile missile Monday was hailed as a success by Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, the Novosti news agency reported.
The A-135 test was conducted at the Sary-Shagaz testing range in Kazakhstan Monday morning.
"The missile accurately hit the training target," the military press corps said in a statement. "All the tactical and technical performance characteristics of the missile were confirmed, which enables us to make a positive decision on the extension of the service life of this type of missile systems."
Just two weeks ago, President Vladimir Putin said Russia was working on new nuclear missile systems that "other nuclear powers do not and will not possess."
The A-135 system missiles have been in service since the beginning of the 1950s. Their assignment is to protect and defend the Moscow region, the Itar-Tass news agency said.
