MOSCOW -- President Vladimir Putin announced Wednesday Russia is developing a new missile system.
At a conference of military leaders in Moscow, Putin spoke of the creation of a basic system for land forces and new-generation small arms, and the successful completion of trials of a naval nuclear missile system, Interfax reported.
"We are conducting research and are testing the most up-to-date nuclear missile systems, which, I'm sure, will be supplied to the armed forces in the near future," he said. "What is even more important, these systems will have no (counterparts) in the other nuclear powers during the next few years."
He also told the officers the focus of internal command agencies is to improve combat-readiness.
"(That) must become the core and the main striking force of the army," he said.
