WARSAW, Poland -- Leaders from central and eastern Europe offered condolences to the Palestinian people Thursday following the death of Yasser Arafat.
The Polish foreign ministry said in a statement: "In connection with the death of the president of the Palestinian National Authority, Mr. Yasser Arafat, the president of the Polish Republic has sent a cable of condolences to Mr. Rawhi Fattouh, chairman of the Palestinian Legislative Council."
A statement from the Czech foreign ministry to the CTK news agency said news of Arafat's death had been received with "emotion." Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda will attend the funeral in Cairo.
A statement from the Slovak foreign ministry said: "The Slovak Republic expresses its deep condolences to the family and the bereaved of the late Yasser Arafat. We sincerely empathize with the Palestinian nation in its period of mourning."
