AMMAN, Jordan -- Jordan, an ally for Washington in the Middle East, will receive an estimated $450 million in U.S. assistance in 2005, official reports said Monday.
The mass-circulation Amman daily al-Rai quoted an official source as saying Jordan will receive assistance "once the U.S. Congress approves foreign aid quotas."
The source expected the volume of assistance to be increased at Jordan's request.
Jordan, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, has since benefited from considerable U.S. military and economic assistance annually.
Regular annual assistance comprises military aid worth $200 million and economic aid of $250 million. In 2004, however, Jordan received an additional $550 million while in 2003, U.S. assistance reached $1.1 billion to help Amman shore up its economy and deal with the fallout of Washington's invasion of Iraq.
