Eleven states approve bans on gay marriage
Wed, Nov 03, 2004
Source UPI

WASHINGTON -- All 11 states considering ballot initiatives to ban same-sex marriage look likely to pass the measure.

The numbers compiled by CNN show clear support for the measures in at least 10 of the 11 states. Oregon was decided by the smallest margin, with 12 percent separating supporters and the opposition. With 60 percent of precincts reporting, 56 percent of voters there supported the ban, while 44 percent opposed it.

The state with greatest support for the measure was Mississippi, where it was passing 86 percent to 14 percent with 71 percent reporting.

Louisiana and Missouri approved similar measures earlier this year.

In other ballot measures, Colorado's initiative to split its electoral votes based on its popular vote failed.

A measure to amend the Florida constitution to require parental notification before minors have abortions passed by a solid margin, 65 percent to 35 percent with nearly all precincts reporting.

Other measures likely to pass were Arizona's Proposition 200 requiring proof of citizenship to receive state benefits, California's measure to raise $3 billion for stem cell research, an increase of $1 of Florida's minimum wage and allowing the use of medical marijuana in Montana.
