SANTIAGO, Chile -- Chile has begun its security preparations for the upcoming international leaders meeting in Santiago of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation group.
The annual APEC summit is being hosted by a South American nation for the first time.
Almost 3,500 police will patrol the streets of the capital in preparation for the arrival of noted leaders such as President Bush, according to La Tercera newspaper Sunday.
Created in 1989, APEC consists of Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, South Korea, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
There have been some protests leading up to the meeting and scattered reports of violence.
