U.S. stocks up, oil prices down

NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks picked up momentum Thursday on the strength of big tech gains and a hefty slide in oil prices.
The Dow Jones industrials finished up 84.36 points, or 0.81 percent, at 10,469.84, bolstered by strong financial reports from Hewlett-Packard, Intel and IBM.
Nasdaq jumped 26.71, or 1.31 percent, to 2,061.27 and the Standard & Poor's 500 was up 10.57, or 0.91 percent, to 1,173.48.
Oil prices dropped significantly, settling down $1.44 at $47.42 a barrel.
The dollar was uneven, trading at 106.59 yen, down from 107.17, while the euro strengthened against the dollar to $1.2907 from $1.2895.
The bond market was closed for the Veterans Day holiday.
Meanwhile, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 plunged 148.92 points, or 1.4 percent, to close at 10,846.92 and London's FTSE-100 was 0.7 percent higher at 4,769.
