U.S. stocks slowed by oil, profit reports

NEW YORK -- The upward creep of oil prices and a steady flow of disappointing corporate profit reports dampened U.S. stocks Thursday. The Dow Jones industrials dropped 43.44 or 0.44 percent to 9,843.49 in mid-morning trading. Nasdaq was up 0.84 or 0.04 percent to 1,933.81 and the Standard & Poor 500 lost 1.73 or 0.16 percent to 1,101.93.
Oil prices climbed 32 cents to $54.73 a barrel.
Bonds weakened. The 10-year Treasury note edged down 3/32, or 94 cents for each $1,000 invested. The yield 3.97 percent.
The dollar also weakened. It was at 107.42 yen, off from 108.21, while the euro rose against the dollar to $1.2628 from $1.2582.
Overseas, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 ended down 92.95 points, or 0.9 percent, at 10,789.23, following a 182.68 fall Wednesday.
