NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks rose modestly Tuesday on mixed corporate reports and currency market fears driven by a persistently weak dollar.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 3.02 or 0.03 percent to 10,057.41 in a volume of 1.23 billion shares. The Nasdaq composite gained 7.99 or 0.40 percent to 1,987.86, and the Standard & Poor's 500 picked up 2.06 or 0.18 percent to 1,132.57.

The December contract for crude oil was down to $54.04 a barrel in electronic trading ahead of the New York Mercantile Exchange opening.

The 10-year Treasury note gained 3/32 point, or 93.75 cents for each $1,000 invested, for a 4.07 percent yield.

The dollar fell to 106.39 yen from 106.46, while the euro fell to $1.2667 from $1.2755.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 rose 153.10 points or 1.4 percent to 10,887.81 points. London's FTSE 100 closed at 4,693.20, rising 19.40 or 0.42 percent.
