U.S. stocks, in all categories, soaring

NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks rocketed out of the gate Wednesday with all major indexes charging up more than a full percentage points.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 101.32 or 1.01 percent to 10,137.05 on a volume of 1.14 billion shares. The Nasdaq composite soared 19.54 or 0.98 percent to 2,004.33, and the Standard & Poor's 500 grabbed 12.64 or 1.12 percent to 1,143.20.

Whether from satisfaction over the outcome of the presidential election or just relief that the campaign has ended, the bulls drove the bears out of blue chips, techs and other types of stocks.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 14/32 point, or almost $5 for each $1,000 invested, for a 4.11 percent yield.

The dollar rose to 106.21 yen from 106.16, and the euro rose to $1.2781 from $1.2726.

Nearly all Asian markets reported big gains. Hong Kong's major stock index rose 0.67, and South Korea gained 1.7 percent. Tokyo markets were closed for a holiday.

London's FTSE 100 closed at 4,718.50, after rising 25.30 or 0.54 percent.
