WASHINGTON -- The nation's largest toy retailers have begun the holiday price wars, although the traditional shopping season does not kick off until Nov. 26.
KB Toys Inc. and Toys R Us Inc., two of the largest retailers, have their survival on the line this season, the Washington Post reported Sunday. The 2003 holiday season saw retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc. undercutting KB Toys and Toys R Us by up to 20 percent. KB Toys has since filed for bankruptcy protection, closed 427 stores and announced plans to close 160 others. Toys R Us has undertaken a corporate reorganization and said it may sell its toy business after the holidays. However, in a recent offensive, Toys R Us has been beating Wal-Mart in some price comparisons. In a survey released this week, brokerage house Oppenheimer and Co. found Toys R Us undercut Wal-Mart by 5 percent for a shopping cart filled with 62 toys. Harris Nesbitt Corp., in its own survey published this week, found Toys R Us undercut Wal-Mart by 0.2 percent for a shopping cart filled with 75 toys. Copyright 2004 by United Press International
