SYDNEY -- Australians work the longest hours in the industrialized world and could work themselves right into an early grave, a report says. The Australian Institute, in its report, says if workers took the rest of the year off now and then took annual leave, they still would have worked the same as the average worker in other industrialized countries.
Australian workers ordinarily clock up about 1,855 hours each year compared to the developed country average of 1,643, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. says. Australia has the fourth-highest proportion of people working more than 50 hours a week, behind Japan, New Zealand and the United States. "They are reporting higher degrees of stress and anxiety, and obesity, depression and heart disease are on the rise," says Clive Hamilton, director of the Australian Institute.
