Stock markets must disclose more
Tue, Nov 09, 2004

WASHINGTON -- The Securities and Exchange Commission said Tuesday stock markets should disclose more information about themselves, including how much they pay senior officials.

At an open meeting of the SEC, its chairman William Donaldson told the five commissioners, "After a period of intense focus on public company governance, we would be remiss if we did not seek to apply the lessons learned to the governance of (self-regulatory organizations)."

SROs are institutions that govern stock markets, including the New York Stock Exchange. The SEC is pressing for SROs to disclose their financial details and separate their regulatory functions from other business interests in response to last year's controversy over then-NYSE head Richard Grasso's $188 million paycheck. Grasso was forced to resign following the scandal.
