WASHINGTON -- The number of U.S. small grew by 3.9 percent from 2001 to 2002, the U.S. Census Bureau said Tuesday, with the state of Nevada leading the way. During the one year period, the latest for which the data is available, the number of businesses that have one or more owner but no paid employees and represent 70 percent of the U.S. total, went from 17 million to more than 17.6 million, the bureau said in its 2002 report on Non-employer Statistics.
Nevada's 7.4 percent increase was the nation's largest. Georgia, which slipped from first to second place in 2002, experienced an increase of 6.3 percent, the same percentage as recorded in Florida. Rounding out the top five were Texas and Delaware, which both posted gains of 5.2 percent in non-employer business growth. The Census Bureau described these concerns as being run "by one or more individuals," ranging from "home-based businesses to corner stores or construction contractors." They are, the bureau said, often part-time ventures with owners operating more than one business at a time." The rate of increase during the 2000 to 2001 period was 2.7 percent.
