WASHINGTON -- Payrolls surged by 337,000 jobs in October, the biggest nonfarm-payroll increase since March, the U.S. Labor Department said Friday.
Post-hurricane recovery helped boost jobs, the Labor Department said.
August and September payrolls were also upwardly revised, adding an additional 115,000.
Another government survey, the household survey, shows employment up by about 300,000 workers.
However it also showed unemployment up about 0.1 percentage point to 5.5 percent.
The job surge came just a few days before a scheduled Federal Reserve meeting, where officials are expected to raise rates one-quarter percentage point to 2 percent.
Hurricane cleanup and rebuilding helped boost construction jobs by 71,000 and service jobs by 272,000. However manufacturing jobs fell by 5,000.
