ATLANTA -- Cingular Wireless of Atlanta plans to dismiss 7,000 people, or about 10 percent of its workforce, to help pay for its AT&T Wireless purchase.
Most layoffs will come in administrative and managerial positions that were made redundant by the $41 billion deal, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
Most of the dismissals will take place during the next 18 months, a company spokesman said.
Employees who work at retail outlets or customer care centers that deal with the company's 47 million subscribers will be less affected, the company said.
