Blue chips fall, tech stocks gain

NEW YORK -- Disappointing third-quarter earnings reports and a massive investigation of the insurance industry drove U.S. blue chips lower Wednesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 10.69 points, or 0.11 percent, to end at 9,866.93 on a volume of 1.03 billion shares. The Nasdaq composite rose 10.07 points, 0.52 percent, to end the day at 1,932.97, and the Standard & Poor's 500 gained 0.43 points, or 0.04 percent, to close at 1,103.66.

New York's attorney general is investigating alleged bid-rigging and fraud in the insurance industry.

Third quarter results for Motorola and J.P. Morgan both missed expectations, the former with revenues and the latter with income.

The 10-year Treasury note rose about 1/4, or $2.50 for each $1,000 invested, for a 4 percent yield.

The dollar slipped to 108.29 yen from 108.46, and the euro rose to $1.2593 from $1.2522.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 ended down 182.68 points, or 1.7 percent, at 10,882.18. London's FTSE 100 closed at 4,616.40 after falling 38.80 or 0.83 percent
